How does LEED make construction projects more Green?

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a program devised by the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC) to encourage sustainable practices in the design and development of buildings. It has established standards of performance used worldwide for design, construction, operation and maintenance including energy conservation, recycling, daylighting, use of sustainable materials and techniques, as well as life cycle costs and payback analysis. LEED buildings attract tenants, cost less to operate and boost employee productivity and retention.

LEED certification provides independent verification of a building or development’s green features. Accreditation is based on a point scoring system divided into categories which reflect the level or extent of green building construction methods and sustainable construction materials incorporated in the project. The USBGC awards four levels for LEED Designation:

1. LEED Certified: 40 to 49 points

2. LEED Silver: 50 to 59 points

3. LEED Gold: 70 to 79 points

4. LEED Platinum: 80+ points

Evaluation for LEED certification is based on green building categories:

1. Water and energy efficiency

2. Materials and resources

3. Indoor environmental quality

4. Waste reduction

5. Sustainable site, location and transportation

LEED certification is a process of four primary steps: 

1. Register your project

2. Submit your completed application

3. Your application is reviewed for the appropriate points gained in each category

4. Certification is awarded for the level you have achieved
