Trader Joe’s held its Grand Opening on Friday, September 25th as the main attraction of “The Parke at Hamburg,” a new shopping center on 910 Hamburg Turnpike.

The popular grocery store relocated from Berdan Shopping center, less than a mile away.

The new store is 13,500-square-feet, double its former size, located just west of the Valley Road intersection in Wayne, NJ.

The Parke at Hamburg Retail Center was 12-years in the making, developed by owner Lou March and built by locally-owned, multigenerational firm March Associates Construction, Inc.

It began construction in October 2019.

Patrick Heaney, project manager for The Parke at Hamburg, says that the 50,150-square-foot shopping center took about 9 months to complete.

Six more tenants will occupy the strip mall:

The Paper Store, Ulta Beauty, The Habit Burger Grill, and Sport Clips are estimated to open in October 2020. Everbrook Academy will likely open in November and Panera Bread will open in Spring 2021.

The Parke at Hamburg serves the needs of the local market to have stable retail, restaurant, and service-oriented businesses.

Project Manager Patrick Heaney Talks Construction: Building The Parke Retail Center

“The project started as a fully wooded site with a single-family house and detached Barn. We started clearing trees on October 1st. Some challenges included installing  a retaining wall right on the neighboring property line. With a building being only 6′ away, we had to re-engineer the wall by adding an SOE wall and using sonic heads with vibration monitors to make sure that there was no damage can occur to the neighboring building’s structure.

Working on County Road work was new for me. We had to widen Hamburg Turnpike and remove the center concrete divider. All utilities were on the other side of the road, so it created some challenges. We needed to bring 2 water mains across, a sewer main and a storm drain all had to cross Hamburg Turnpike. We also had to install a new concrete divider and a 4-corner traffic light.” – Project Manager Patrick Heaney, March Associates Construction.
